We are not the self-promoting kind of people, in fact, it is so hard for us to ask for donations, ask people to hear our hearts, yet all at once we know people won’t see it until they hear it. So we humble ourselves and keep a constant focus on fund raising. It is very tiring, and sometimes we feel like we are annoying people, and I’m sure we have – people are just too nice to say anything. As we move forward with our long-term fund raising it will be even more important to spread the word in so many ways.

We are focusing our attempts at the social-web movement, as the cost is great (free), and people seem to be reacting to it fairly well. We’ll still send out snail mail for those that have been responding to that well, but for the most part our support basis is from the online community (of which many are in our physical lives as well). We are creating a video that we hope will express our hearts in a completely new way, for we know that God has called us to this, and we commit ourselves to steward the resources we have.

And then God does some funny things – such as a $2,000 donation from someone you’ve never really had any relationship with. Yep, that happened just this past week, in fact yesterday, which added to all the crazy emotions of the past week. Praise God, he is faithful, and we love to walk forward with him, although we never know how we’re going to get anywhere.

August 15th Fund Raiser

As everyone is aware airline prices have been skyrocketing, and this has affected our budget for our trip in October to Poland. We have always had a contingency built into our budget, but now we are in need of increasing that. Right now our trip has increased from $1,500 a person to $1,800 and each week it rises. Due to the urgency in purchasing our tickets before prices increase any further, we are planning a fund raising event. We will serve a Polish dinner and desserts, have a video explaining all things about REACH Polska, and a Q&A time.

If you are unable to attend but would like to donate please see donation information on the right of the home page. A $45 offering (please tithe to your home church) from 200 people pays for the entire team’s expenses.  Thanks, in the Lord’s name, amen.

What will we do in October?

Our passions that we would like to bring to the younger generation revolve around small group ministry. We have been using John and Sonja Decker’s book “Holy Spirit Empowered Small Groups” in our own home group, and have seen amazing results with our group going and growing deeper in ways that un-hide our shame and speak grace into the dark parts of our past and present.

Alexis and I will be doing Language School as well, so that will take up a chunk of our time in the day time (Mon thru Fri), our friends who are coming with us will be watching our daughter, but will also be available in any tangible way to serve the Polish people (moving, painting, etc) if there is not anything along those lines to do, than they’ll be praying around the city and whoever wants to join them is welcome.

Also, we are open to meet with people/couples for coffee or in their homes, simply to encourage them and build relationships. We envision taking 3 or 4 nights a week doing a home/small group intensive based on the book. The rest of our time and focus would be on language, sharing with our team mates Poland, praying, and serving in whatever ways we can, by meeting with people and anything else that may come up. We want to focus on character discipleship.

We hope to visit the Nowy Targ/Zakopane area on the weekend of the 10-12 (Fri-Sat) for a retreat, but the details of this are sketchy at best. We are looking into staying at a hotel, and are also open to the possibility of staying in host homes, but we do not want to be a burden on anyone, so only if there are people who are desiring to host us, otherwise we are fine with staying in a hotel/hostel, although at this point with increased airfare costs, it is getting tight.

Thanks for your prayers as we move forward.

Furniture in Poland

Looks like Poland doesn’t have a shortage of furniture, at least we know we’ll have plenty to choose from.

Poland is third largest furniture exporter in Europe
Warsaw, Poland July 21, 2008
Poland is the third largest furniture exporter in the EU, after Germany and Italy.

Last year, Poland exported more than EUR 4.4 bln in furniture to European markets. According to a report published by the Centre for Industrial Studies (CSIL) in Milan, Poland is among the ten biggest furniture manufacturers in the world, with around 3% share of world furniture production estimated at $307 bln.

The overall value of the Polish furniture export amounts to EUR 7.6 bln and increased by 22% when compared to 2006.

Saying goodbye

We have some friends who are leaving today, they are moving to Redmond, OR – their the same friends who had their baby boy just 10 hours before Emma arrived.  God has opened some amazing doors up for them, a new house, work, etc.

Gets me thinking about the final farewell we’ll have someday, although I know it’ll be a “see you later” kind of thing, it is hard to think about not being here when friends go through hard times, or good times.  The challenge of building new relationships that are as close and deep (and going deeper) is sometimes very hard to swallow.  Just some thoughts.

Starbucks and Church

I’m sitting in a Starbucks here in Gresham, had devotion time with Marcus.  In the few hours I’ve been here I’ve overheard at least four different conversations around me… all people discussing ministry, mostly people in worship/music ministry.  So I began thinking, wow, here I am in one of the most “unchurched” states in the nation and multiple people, who probably don’t know each other, all serving the Lord in some way or another, enjoying fellowship.

Then I think about my friends in Poland, for them to hear a casual conversation from other Christians in a public place would be like finding a lost family member.  I’m amazed, thankful, grateful, and reminded of the calling we have in Poland.  A place where there are less evangelical works in the entire country than some Middle Eastern cities (see our Why Poland page).  I’m sure that in Oregon, with only a population close to 4 million, has more bible believing, walking with the Lord, Christians than the entire 40 million of Poland.

Relfection on worship

Sometimes I let the “jadedness” of the church, my generation, and the world get into my thoughts, and I can be pretty critical and unable to enjoy worship services. But, when my heart is in the right place, I am overwhelmed by God’s glory. I can not help but to worship him with abandonment.

Tonight could have been one of those nights, we went to church, and I was feeling okay, a bit tired from a long day. So I prayed that my heart be soft, and that I accept the Church and its people for everything that they are, both wrong, right, and indifferent – who am I anyway to judge those things, I’m to love, and be loved – and that is something our church body knows how to do.

As we worshiped, then alter took communion, I was once again humbled, once again reminded of the fact that we will leave this place, these people, and travel halfway around the world to serve and worship in another tongue and culture. That is when I am overcome with emotions that I can’t explain, both excitement and grief, loss and purpose.

Grand opening – Welcome!

Welcome to REACH Polska, this new blog/website is the home of all things related to our family and Poland missions. I’m sure there will be some tweaks, so explore, take a look, leave comments, and stay tuned for much more content.

For your information we now officially have 5 people joining us on our October Kraków trip! Alexis, Myself, Brandon Kraft, and Jenise and Corey Roach! We have another couple that appears to be very inerested and a few others on the side-lines! This is a HUGE blessing for us, as we always want to share more about Poland, and now we have friends coming with us who we know will help spread the vision here on the home-front once we permanantly move.

Closer to official launch

Not sure if anyone is poking around on this yet or not.  However, I would consider this site/blog nearly ready for public launching, just a few more little tweaks (okay probably a lot, but the functionality is here now).
