National Tragedy

Today the citizens of Poland experienced a national tragedy of significant size.  You can read an excellent article about the plane carrying the Polish president, which crashed and killed all aboard.

The toll cut a swath through Poland’s elite. The 97 dead included the army chief of staff, the head of the National Security Office, the national bank president, the deputy foreign minister, the deputy parliament speaker, the civil rights commissioner and other members of parliament.

Also aboard the plane were war veterans and surviving family members of Poles killed by the Soviets. There was 90-year-old Ryszard Kaczorowski, Poland’s last “president-in-exile” during the Soviet years. And Anna Walentynowicz, the shipyard worker whose dismissal in 1980 sparked the Solidarity union protests that eventually led to the collapse of Polish communism and made the symbolic first chink in the Berlin Wall.

To lose such a large number of important, culturally significant, and historically revered people is almost unimaginable.  In a nation which has quite possibly had some of the hardest history in the past 100 years, this kind of event is not just tragic, it is spiritually wounding.  As we prepare to serve in Poland we are more and more aware of the devastation this nation has been put through.  Our hearts are saddened, and our prayers are humbly attempting to seek God’s peace for Poland in the wake of such an event.

Make a pledge!

Hey everyone,

Been a while since we wrote about our fundraising progress. So, here we go…. We need your help! We know this is a rough time for many people, including ourselves, so much up in the air, a lot of financial unknowns, etc. So we ask anyone thinking of supporting us to please consider the following…

  1. Please do not “tithe” to us – we believe the tithe is an act of worship, to be given to your local community of believers, the place you call home, the place where you receive support from a loving Christ centered group of people.
  2. Please pray before giving, this might seem like a “duh”, but we just want to make it clear, giving to a ministry is a sacrificial act, something which is akin to the offerings of the old testament.
  3. Please stay connected, follow our progress, and pray for the work God is doing in Poland.  The number one best thing anyone can do for us is be in continued prayer, the battle at the front lines begin with your prayers.

With all of that said… would you (or maybe you know someone who would) consider pledging to support us on a monthly basis?  Maybe you can’t start right now, but you know you can at some point in the future?  Visit our donation page and sign up!  This will help us to track our monthly budget needs, and help us see our fund raising progress.  When we reach 120% of our budget in pledges, then we’ll be released!

Thank you and God bless!

The next trip!

All of us in Krakow OCT 08

We have been fairly low key about some plans which have been brewing for a little while… a trip to Poland in January! It will be from January 11th to the 28th, God has provided essentially all of the funds already, so no fund-raising!  We are excited and at the same time in a lot of prayer, we will be meeting with friends and leaders learning about many of the details it will take for us to make the big move.  We ask for you to intercede with us now, as we know there will be many details and more obstacles which can seem overwhelming.

The goal of this trip is two fold.  First, take as much opportunity to observe ministry, with our friends in Kraków and in Wrocław (we’ll be there too, more on that in a minute).  We’ll be attending every event we can, having coffee with every person we can, and praying a lot.  We need to begin making these appointments now – which can be difficult, so please be praying that people’s schedules allow us to be used by God.

Second, we will be meeting with other Foursquare friends, leaders, and missionaries in Wrocław (about 3 hours west of Kraków).  They are the leaders of The Rock church and we are excited to share with them what God has laid on our hearts, to learn from them, and simply fellowship and glean what God is doing through them.

We covet your prayers and look forward to what God is doing!  If you’re Polish and reading this, let’s schedule some time for coffee!  :)

An update! Finally!

The radio silience of this blog has certainly been an indicator of our real life, but finally we have taken the time to make a newsletter.  Check it out.  Hopefully some more action will take place around here.

The heart of our missions family…

I finally took the time today to check out some videos that our missions organization (Foursquare Missions International) has posted on Facebook and my heart and soul were filled with joy at the great things God is doing through our church “family”.  There are a lot of amazing organizations out there, and we plan on working with all of the Church and Foursquare is just a small piece of what God is doing – we’re just excited to be a part of something has held onto the importance of relationship over structure.

Check out all the videos here.  My favorite and most exciting one for me is this one.

A quick update from the training

Just a quick update from the training – check out some pictures on the Foursquare Missions‘ blog of our training time here in Los Angeles.  It has been an incredible time here, amazing people, and we feel so blessed to be a part of such a great work, and a great family of people whose heart’s are with the Lord and whose only desire is to continue the work began with the Apostles in Acts!

April Missions Training

In April we will be going to Los Angeles to Foursquare Headquarters for a missionary training intensive. It is 10 straight days of all-day instruction, much like a college intensive.  We have a number of reading materials to get through, such as:

  • Ministering Cross-Culturally by Sherwood Lingenfelter and Marvin Mayers.  Please take tests on pages 29 -35 prior to training and bring these with you to Orlando.
  • Doing What Jesus Did by John and Sonja Decker
  • Cross-Cultural Conflict by Duane Elmer
  • Disciples of All Nations: Continual Mission Until He Comes by John Amstutz with workbook by Gary Matsdorf     Please complete workbook responses prior to training.
  • Re-Entry by Peter Jordan
  • Culture Shock Poland

Some of it is required before the training and other parts are before we are deployed.  Eitherway it’s a lot to get in for a fully invovled family.  We are also scrambling to find someone to come with us (airfare & expenses paid, thanks to our Church) to baby-sit Emma while we are away during the days.  We’ve had a few people be interested but it just hasn’t worked out for anyone.

So that’s a quick update on what’s going on with our missions work.

Paper-cuts are on their way

This past week has been a lot of prepping for paper-cuts.  Next week we will be printing and stuffing over a hundred envelopes full of the plans for our future.  This is a very important first step into our official fund-raising phase, getting the word out.  Our goal is to have at least 100 monthly donations of $30.  There is a lot out there “fighting” for people’s money, so we are spending a lot on presenting ourselves in a serious and professional way that communicates what God has put in our hearts for not just the “people” in Kraków, but our friends.

Keep us in our prayers, for the paper-cuts to be minimal, that printers print what we need w/o wasting envelopes (which we have had custom made), and that God leads us to send these “kits” to the right people.   We are also raising funds for our last short-term trip this coming July – which is a separate beast in and of itself, the team is looking to be a great and amazing team – which we are all very excited about – and that’s another prayer point as well.

REACH Polska…. The next mission…

It has been a few months since we returned from our last mission in Poland in October, 2008. It was a learning experience that we will never forget. From the exhausting flights and layovers to sickness and injury then to miraculous healing and building of new relationships we gained a new desire for the Nation of Poland. Our resolve has never been stronger to see our friends there receive healing in the area of relationships and freedom from bondage and strengthening in their relationship with God.

We learned that there are communications barriers that we need to overcome and while this is true here in the states as well as in other parts of Europe, Poland is where our heart is. The uniqueness of Poland is the population of Bible believing Christians is less than one percent. While the country is 99.99% Catholic, there is still need for truth and healing.

We are looking to head back in late July. Outreach is on our list of things to do, as well as create a video of interviews from the Christian Polish community to find out what it is that they want for their people. What is it that we can bring to them that is tangible that they can take to their families and friends in order to release healing and start a move of Christ that will encompass the city of Krakow.

We have a support and newsletter that will be coming out soon to ask for your support for this next trip. The trip will be 2 weeks in length. We will need prayer and financial support.

You can donate by following the Paypal Link on this page!

A big year ahead…

This new year marks the beginning of a very important phase in our ministry.  Beginning this month we begin our long-term mission campaign!  Our church council and missions team have cleared the way to send us as long term missionaries to Kraków, Poland.  From this point forward we’ll be seeking at least 100 donors to donate $30.15 on a monthly basis from now until August 2010 – this will help put $61,155.00 into our reserve account for us to start out (includes funds for living, ministry, and travel).

We’ll be getting the word out very soon to our current donor network.  We have a lot of logistics to get through and we’re feeling the stress, not in a bad way, but in a very “this is fo real” kind of way.  Please keep us in your prayers, consider being a monthly contributor, and each of us who personally know God are in the ministry as well, so we wish to hear from you, so we can pray and support what God is asking you to do and doing through you in your lives as well,

Kraków mission – accomplished

So I’m finally able to relax a bit, nothing is planned for tonight and I’ve done enough thinking and processing about our trip that I can finally put most of it into words.  In general I feel good about it, we spent significant time with people, creating new relationships, building up our existing ones, and ministering to our closest friends there.  Overall this was the most exhausting trip for Alexis and I, due to the fact that on most days we got up at 6am and didn’t get to bed until around 10pm.  We were getting up so early because we had about a 45 minute commute (via Bus and Tram) to the language school, which was from 9:30 to 2pm each day.  While we were in school the rest of our team tried to meet up with people (not very successfully), prayed for the city and churches, and explored possible future neighborhoods for us.

Speaking of language school, now that we’ve taken nearly a week break, we know we need to get back to studying – and hopefully, God providing, taking private lessons from the director of the Polish school here in Portland.  The course was very intensive and at times frustrating, however, I think we learned the concepts and with some review, and diligence on our part, God will help us get the fundamentals in our head.

Over the course of our first week we came up against some not so explainable health issues, on the first day Alexis got sick to her stomach on the tram to school, so much so she felt she was going to faint, instead she threw up.  Unfortunately the only thing she had to throw up into was Emma’s blanket, the rest of our fellow tram passengers didn’t offer much help, either because they didn’t know how, or the language barrier froze them, or both.  Eitherway I found myself a bit upset that no one offered any help – all I could do was pray, so that’s what I did.  By the time we were at the school Alexis felt better – one of the most stressful moments of my life I think!

Then on Tuesday (I think) Charis got sick (our friend who came to help watch Emma while we were in school) and threw up all night long.  After some prayer with her home-stay host she was able to sleep in, Aris and Brandon took over Emma duty that day at school and by the afternoon Charis joined us.  By then we knew something wasn’t quite right, because there wasn’t really anyway to explain these mysterious sicknesses.  The saga continues with me getting a very strange cramping in my stomach all day Thursday, Brandon getting a nasty head-cold also on Thursday, me having cramps again on Saturday, Aris with a migraine, and when Corey and Jenise joined us on Saturday, Corey got pretty sick around their second day as well.  Through prayer and endurance we didn’t miss what God called us to do, learn the language and build relationships.

In spite of all the sickness thrown at us, and some communication mishaps, God confirmed over and over and through multiple people that the Polish people, our friends, and those that we hardly know, are encouraged, excited, and ready to have more people in Kraków to work in God’s kingdom.  Our commitment to learn the language in advance of our move has spoken volumes to the Poles – and over and over we heard “the single biggest sign that God is calling you here is that he has opened the door for you to learn Polish and you are doing it” – many other missionaries in times past have not taken this important step.  Not to compare ourselves, but to contrast the difference in preparation that we feel God is very specifically asking us to do.

Enough of me blabbering – Brandon has some great photos up on facebook, below are the public links (you don’t need Facebook to see them).

Do a little dance!

So, God is truly a LAST minute God, I know he always has been, and that wont’ be changing it looks like.  We’ve gone from, not sure if Corey and Jenise will be coming to their coming FOR SURE.  In the past two hours over $950 has been secured!  PRAISE JESUS!  From three different donors, who have no idea of each other, AMAZING grace, that’s what this is.

Almost ready for takeoff.

Tomorrow night we will receive prayer from our church as they send us off to Kraków.  We are $658 short of buying our last two tickets, and tomorrow night we make the decision as to how we navigate this, as I see it we have the following options.

  1. Pay for the tickets, covering the shortage on our own – leaving us w/o spending money, but with our dear friends.
  2. Buy one ticket – and whatever is left over will be for spending expenses (not much though).
  3. Make the decision for Corey and Jenise to stay behind, leaving us money for trip expenses.
  4. Wait for full provision of the last two tickets and money for spending, as they have about 6 extra days (they will join us on the 10th if all goes well).

Be praying, we’ll see what God has in store!

Poles, Missles, Shields

MSNBC’s World Blog has an interesting entry up about the Polish people who live in the city that will host the US missile shield.  There’s a good section about the history of Poland, gives a general picture of what the “mood” of the nation is.

U.S. and Poland Set Missile Deal – NYTimes.com

Some very interesting news out of Poland, this has been years in the making, but the quickness in light of the Georgia fiasco is interesting.  Check it out: U.S. and Poland Set Missile Deal – NYTimes.com.

This could make for a fairly interesting future for Alexis and I, I can’t help but to think about some of the Armegedon end-times theories that talk about Russia as the invader from the North…

Fundraiser dinner canceled

Hi Everyone,

Due to the small number of people able to attend our fund raiser this Friday, we have decided to refocus our resources into (hopefully) a more productive campaign.  The event we had planned for this Friday is canceled.  Stay tuned for the next couple of days while we re-work a new fund raising campaign.

Just FYI:  We need $7,000 by September 15th.  Stay tuned to this site for more information!

Stay tuned for more ways on how to help us get there!

Thanks for your understanding and prayers!

Provision

We are not the self-promoting kind of people, in fact, it is so hard for us to ask for donations, ask people to hear our hearts, yet all at once we know people won’t see it until they hear it. So we humble ourselves and keep a constant focus on fund raising. It is very tiring, and sometimes we feel like we are annoying people, and I’m sure we have – people are just too nice to say anything. As we move forward with our long-term fund raising it will be even more important to spread the word in so many ways.

We are focusing our attempts at the social-web movement, as the cost is great (free), and people seem to be reacting to it fairly well. We’ll still send out snail mail for those that have been responding to that well, but for the most part our support basis is from the online community (of which many are in our physical lives as well). We are creating a video that we hope will express our hearts in a completely new way, for we know that God has called us to this, and we commit ourselves to steward the resources we have.

And then God does some funny things – such as a $2,000 donation from someone you’ve never really had any relationship with. Yep, that happened just this past week, in fact yesterday, which added to all the crazy emotions of the past week. Praise God, he is faithful, and we love to walk forward with him, although we never know how we’re going to get anywhere.
