Update

Alexis wrote an update on how our first couple days have been with our Polish friends in town. Go HERE to read and see a couple pictures.

Over all we love them. Tons. Our heart is SO for them and what God is calling them to be. And we are excited to strengthen that bond we have and to pour whatever Godly wisdom we have into them.

Seeing them again only grows the love we have for the Poles and we CAN’T WAIT to minister with them in the future, whatever that looks like. lol

Hope you have a GREAT weekend!

Polish food

“No matter where you move to, you better like some of the food. Other wise you’re toast.”

Just some special very wise words I got from a missionary friend. :)

But this got me thinking about my, me being Alexis,  first couple trips to Poland. I went to some of the traditional places that basically served meat and potatoes. With tons of bread which I gobbled up.

But if you know me, potatoes are bottom on the starch list for me. But thankfully, as I visited again and again, I was introduced to more variations of authentic Polish food. And I am so thankful I kept going back! Because not only was God moving in my heart- but I ate some amazing food.

OK, so back to where we are now though-Portland, OR. We are so very very VERY lucky to have a good size Polish community here- with a restaurant!!!

I always eat way too much. :)

My sister and her boyfriend came to visit and we took them here with some friends of ours. It was great. Lots of smiles, beer, cheese/meat pierogi (hand folded of course), Gołąbki and my favorite: Kiełbasa i Bigos. I’m a sucker for sauerkraut. They have food shipped from Poland or Chicago. We talked with the owner and he’s such a nice man. Just a great place. So yeah- try it. you must.

It’s a tiny little place that also sells Polish foods. Yes! And I’ve been wanting to try starting to make some SIMPLE Polish recipes. It’ll be an experiment for sure but a good one!

They have frozen cheese AND CHERRY pierogi!!!!! Don’t know why I haven’t bought any yet. Oh yeah- I spend all our money on the food we eat! And they also have Trav’s favorite cookies.

So if you are in the area you need to try this place out. And if you are visiting we will be happy to take you there. (any chance to go eat there again!)

We chose community.

Poland January 2010 027.JPG

For us community is important, in fact we try to be intentional with engaging our community. Both our physical community and our church community is very important to us. But we find that all to often it’s “just easier” to be amongst our church friends, yet we state a value is for our surrounding neighbors.

So with our recent move we have began to engage our neighbors more often than before, this is a little easier when a full apartment building of 81 units shares one elevator! Now some people say they would hate this, we love it, it puts us with people who need encouragement, love, and grace everyday! We are no longer stuck in our suburban cave going in and out of our garage. We love walking to get most of our errands done and taking transit at other times (although we still have a car, we use it for longer trips and groceries). This kind of living puts us right in the path of people and allows us to see humanity as God does.

This is just the beginning of being intentionally focused on everything we do. When we get to Poland we’ll need to be even more focused and make a point to live amongst those that we are called to serve.

Unspoken Expectations or Just Shrewdness?

I was reading in Luke 16 this morning. It was about a parable Jesus gave. I’m not going to explain it here, you should really read it for yourself. But as I finished it I was feeling encouraged but didn’t know why. As I was journaling, I realized that recently I was feeling kinda guilty about making new friendships with the thought that they could encourage us in the future in Poland. I was feeling, I guess, like I had unspoken expectations. But as I finished reading the chapter, I was encouraged to realize that Jesus wants us to be looking always to the future and on being shrewd in our business= including heavenly missions he gives out to families.

I don’t know if this makes any sense to you…but it’s helping me make sense of some feelings I didn’t know how to express. I love friends. And I mean LOVE. We are fortunate to have so many here, and as the time ticks down for us to move…we are still making strong relationships. What I want most out of the people and friends is encouragement and prayer now and in the future. I don’t know how I’ll be feeling 2 yrs from now, but now I would sure like some courage. Courage to face the future and calling in the face and know that since God has called us- we can do it. We will not fail with Him. And also, with you- our friends.

Traditions and Hopes

Just recently I, Alexis, was driving down a street and suddenly became overwhelmed with how much I love seeing Autumn arrive. Everything about it beats every season out of the water. But, the best part of autumn is that it ushers in the holiday season. Costume parties, large family meals, pumpkin spiced everything, eggnog, caramel covered apples, hay rides, pumpkin picking, Christmas everything, New Years and eventually “Expectation Day” also known as Valentines day.(I won’t even get on THAT soap box) So, as the holidays approach, I was emailing with a missionary friend in Turkey how I was morning the loss of some of the traditions here that I love so much.

As I was writing I was challenged to look up and research all the different holidays and traditions the Poles have this time of year. Sure they don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, but they do celebrate the Restoration of their Independence in November. It’s a HUGE holiday, as it should be, and I’m really looking forward to seeing what it looks like to celebrate this. And, on a silly side note, they have a holiday named: Woman’s Day! Hello! Where have you been America? We could have been celebrating Women once a year?! That’s my kind of family holiday. They also have Children’s day- which I think is cool.

Christmas is a big deal there just like it is here…but their St Sylvester’s Eve or New Years Eve parties are WAY, WAY COOLER. They have like a week long celebration and parties all the time and carnivals and of course fireworks and yeah- everything. I’m really looking forward to being apart of that.

All in all, the Poles have tons more holidays than we do. Even though they are obviously different, I really want to taste and experience what it is like to be there and see memories happen.

*I only hope I have my camera ready.

You can visit us and we can do this together!

I will be there someday in the crowd

We are here in LA doing a missions training intensive. We are finaly able to meet new people we’ve heard so much about. It is an awesome thing to be around people with a likeminded passion.

I must say that as details are being put together for our next trip in July, excitment is building. It’s incredible how large this team will be. And I believe it is because of our relationship with each one. When people think of missions and where they would like to go, they usualy think of Africa or Mexico. (for us Americans) How amazing that our heart and love for the Polish is being caught by others here! This is our desire. No matter how many hours of planning, our love for the Polish is catching!
However, one huge detail we need to begin is taking Polish lessons here in the Polish community. How awesome it is that we have a neighborhood here that is proud to be Polish and welcomes others to learn their culture and language. Thank you God!
